| Rhinoceros3D | Makes of some of one of the best pure 3d modeling packages out there.
No fancy renderer, and it does not
do animations, but what it does do it does a great job of. Top notch no hassle tech support for all customers finishes off the already excellent deal on this very affordable 3D modeling package. Highly recommended. (free fully featured demo available from site) |
| Terragen | After a two year delay, the best terrain generator out there is back. As a nice bonus, it is free for non-commercial use. This is one of the programs that helped get me started in 3D modeling. Also Highly recommended. |
| POVRAY |
Free high quality source available ray tracer. Works well with Rhino3D (minus some rather minor caveats). |
|
Photoshop |
The industry standard in 2d photo manipulation and generation. Horribly over priced, but you won't catch me working on a machine without it. Useful and darn near worth its weight in gold. |
|
The Gimp |
The GNU's answer to Photoshop, the interface is a bit quirky and requires some getting used to, but it runs on almost any GUI that you can imagine, and it is open source, free, and has some capabilities that even Photoshop lacks. |
|
Painter 7 |
(Warning: Links to Macromedia Flash content). Likely one of the most powerful digital art programs out there, but the learning curve is measured in how far you have to bend over backwards to figure something out. Recommended only if you have an ample supply of Prozac on hand. |
|
Deep Paint 3D |
Powerful 3D painting program with a Photoshop-like interface. Very useful if you have the experienced needed to setup 3D models to work with it. |
|
3D Cafe |
Great if somewhat over commercialized resource for everything 3D. |
|
Slashdot.org |
My site receives about 20 hits a day solely from people coming in through
the link to this site in my /. sig. It does not matter if a person
believes /. reports the news or just what the editors think is news, or
if they believe that the /. crowd is stuck up and annoying, everybody has
to admit that /. has a major effect on the internet as a whole and has
even extended that effect from time to time into real world politics.
That and John Carmack posts there from time to time, which makes all of the trolls and first posters worth it. |
|
Ars Technica |
Hannibal's articles on CPU architecture are the best introductions to the topic that you are going to find anywhere. |
|
Dan's Data |
Best reviews around anyplace. Period. You will learn something new from every article you read on this site. Mr. Rutter has an ability to write that makes any topic he is explaining easily understandable the first time through. He is also a darn nice guy, and if I ever get around to getting permission I may one day post the interview that I did of him. |
|
AndandTech |
Like them or not, lots of products, lots of reviews, lots of bar graphs. |
|
Tom's Hardware |
The big boy on the block, lots of products review continuously. Another link that will please some and anger others. |
|
The Register |
Home of the BOFH. British run rumor mill of the technology sector, sooner or later they are guaranteed to post something that will anger you; and that is the best part. |
|
The Inquirer.net |
When Mike Magee and The Register had a falling out, The InqWell was the result. Another great technology rumor mill site from Britain. |
|
HardOCP |
Down to earth technology postings, a nice contrast to ArsTechnica and Tomshardware. While Ars Technica and Tomshardware will give it the old college try, HardOCP pounds there review samples to dust, duct tapes them back together, and reports on whether or not the product still works. |
| Bob and George the Comic Strip | The one, the only, the most widely read. Hilarious stuff, pure sprite comic goodness. One of the few sprite comics that I will read. |
|
8-Bit Theater |
I am an 8-bit nut, what can I say. Memories, sweet memories. Classic Final Fantasy humor. And swords. |
|
Paingiver Productions |
Home of The Maggott Show, great web-cast radio show that is likely one of the most offensive things that will ever assault your auditory nerves. Not for anybody with moral fiber of any sort what so ever. On the plus side it is highly original and some of their weapon ideas may inspire you to new hights of creativity when designing dungeons. Recommended, for the small percentage of people in the world who may enjoy it. |
|
Movie Comics |
I rarely watch movies and I still find this hilarious. They have a knack for pointing out time and time again exactly what it is that I dislike so much about the movie industry in America. |
|
ADHD |
The currently running comic on this site is. . . . intriguing. |
|
Chi-Chian |
Independent Artistry rocks. Independent Art that manages to get a corporate sponsor and still stay independent rocks even more. |
| Shadowscapes | The wonderious fantasy artwork of Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. You likely see her work all around you but rarely realize who it is that creates it. She is not only a great visual artist, but also a wonderful writter and holds a computer science degree as well. One of the few people in this world of whom I am jelious of what they are able to accomplish solely with their mind. Truely a gifted and talented person. |
|
Terragen.net |
Anybody who doubts that free software can create wonderful art needs to visit this site. Some of the best rendered landscapes out there. Truly on par, or better, then many of the mainstream real life landscape photographers. |
|
Elfwood |
One of the earliest online fantasy art galleries on the net; still around and still free. Constantly changing, but always dedicated to giving all amateur fantasy artists an outlet for their creations and feedback to improved themselves with. Has both Fantasy and Science Fiction inspired visual artwork as well as Fantasy and Science Fiction literary art. |
| ChinaRoses | A rather entertaining human. |
| ChinaRoses | More of this rather interesting person. |
|
Philip Greenspun |
Defintly a man who has had a serious impact on internet. I have been reading his works for quite some time now. Also a great photographer. |
|
Bob Bemer |
He invented ASCII, the Escape Sequence, and a whole lot of other stuff. One of the living legends of our time. |
